HCMC – Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son has asked Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) to achieve power source capacity growth of more than 15% to support economic expansion of over 10% and meet rising electricity demand from new industries, starting in 2026.

The directive was issued during his working visits on February 23 (the seventh day of the Lunar New Year) to Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group (Petrovietnam), Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex), Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) and EVN.

In 2025, EVN’s consolidated revenue was estimated at VND645.195 trillion, up 10.3% year-on-year. Revenue of its parent company reached VND543.779 trillion, rising 11.8% against 2024.

By the end of 2025, total installed capacity of the national power system, excluding imported electricity, reached around 87,600 MW, an increase of about 6,400 MW compared to 2024. Renewable energy sources, including wind, solar and biomass, accounted for 24,453 MW, or 27.9% of total capacity. Coal-fired power totaled about 28,100 MW, making up 32.1%, while hydropower reached 24,640 MW, or 28.1%. Vietnam’s power system ranks second in ASEAN in terms of installed capacity.

EVN has commissioned multiple power generation and transmission projects, including the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion, the 500kV Lao Cai–Vinh Yen transmission line, and the power supply line and submarine cable to Con Dao Island, while launching construction on several new projects.

Regarding the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant project, negotiations on the intergovernmental agreement have recorded positive results. Relevant parties are continuing discussions on preparatory work to enable the commencement of certain components in 2026.

Deputy Prime Minister Son also requested EVN to ensure on-schedule completion of assigned power source and transmission projects, promptly implement the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant project with a view to mastering the technology, and step up electricity trading cooperation with Laos, Cambodia and China, as well as collaboration with ASEAN partners in developing regional power grids.

He said 2026 will mark the first year of implementing the resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and the start of the 2026-2030 social and economic development plan, requiring strong efforts from major State-owned groups to meet high growth targets.
