Domestic gold prices surge, U.S. dollar slips

HCMC – Domestic gold prices rose sharply this morning September 29, with the SJC-branded gold bar prices gaining VND500,000 per tael, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

As of 9:00 a.m., Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) and Doji listed their gold bar prices at VND133.5 million for buying and VND135.5 million for selling, while Phu Quy quoted them at VND133 million and VND135.5 million. All three dealers raised their prices by VND500,000 per tael from September 27.

Local gold ring prices followed the same upward trend. Bao Tin Minh Chau quoted them at VND129.6 million for buying and VND132.6 million for selling, up VND500,000 per tael from the previous session.

The buy-sell gap remained wide, with SJC gold bars seeing a spread of VND2-2.5 million per tael, while gold rings recorded a spread of some VND3 million per tael.

On the global market, gold was traded around US$3,778 per ounce, equivalent to about VND120 million per tael, still VND15.5 million lower than domestic prices.

This morning, the State Bank of Vietnam set the central exchange rate at VND25,192 per U.S. dollar, down VND2 from the previous session. Commercial banks also adjusted down by VND2, with some quoting selling prices at VND26,451 per U.S. dollar.

Within the trading band of 5% on either side of the central reference exchange rate, Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,181 for buying and VND26,451 for selling. BIDV set its rates at VND26,228-26,451, while VietinBank offered VND26,230-26,451. Eximbank quoted the U.S. dollar at VND26,200 for buying and VND26,451 for selling.
