HCMC – The southern province of Dong Nai has proposed developing a new urban rail link with HCMC’s first metro line at an estimated cost of VND30 trillion.
According to a preliminary feasibility study, the nearly 20-kilometer line would run from S0 Station of Metro Line No. 1 to the Ho Nai 3 area in Trang Bom District, featuring 12 stations and a 23-hectare depot for both passenger and freight services along National Highway 1A, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
The entire route would be elevated, a design choice aimed at reducing construction complexity and integrating with existing residential areas. Many previous urban railway projects in Vietnam have faced delays, often due to reliance on official development assistance (ODA) and associated contractual constraints.
Dong Nai officials are exploring funding options, including provincial and central budget allocations, along with potential loans from other sources. A joint task force has been established with HCMC and Binh Duong to coordinate cross-provincial infrastructure planning.
HCMC formally reached out to Dong Nai and Binh Duong in July 2024, proposing collaborative efforts on railway connections for Metro Line No. 1.
Ho Van Ha, vice chairman of the Dong Nai People’s Committee, has called for a study on special funding mechanisms and the feasibility of underground sections to enhance urban aesthetics. He emphasized that once final funding arrangements are in place, the province will prioritize the project for development.
