CAN THO – Dong Thap Province has set a goal to become one of the Mekong Delta’s leading economies by 2030, shifting from traditional farming to processing industries, services, and high-tech agriculture.
At its provincial Party Congress for the 2025-2030 term, the province said it aims for gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth of 9% a year during the period and at least 10% from 2030. Annual per capita income is projected to reach VND120 million.
Agriculture will remain a key pillar. Dong Thap plans to develop the Dong Thap Muoi area and upstream Tien River areas into hubs for rice, lotus, and freshwater aquaculture. It will also expand large-scale mechanization and traceability systems for fruit exports such as durian, mango, jackfruit, and longan.
In industry, the province plans to open at least 10 new industrial parks covering 5,000 hectares by 2030, with a focus on agro-processing, biotechnology, and supporting industries. It is also positioning industrial zones along the Hau River as national centers for food and seafood processing.
Dong Thap will develop a 15,000-hectare coastal economic zone in Go Cong and a 5,000-hectare international border-gate zone in Thuong Phuoc to support seaport services, logistics, and energy. The province aims to become a regional logistics hub linking the Mekong Delta with HCMC and export markets, with facilities planned in Go Cong, Cao Lanh, Sa Dec, and Hong Ngu.
The province will promote border trade through the Thuong Phuoc and Dinh Ba international gateways and develop eco-agriculture tourism along the Tien and Hau rivers, targeting 50 million visitors in the next five years. Its long-term plan to 2045 is to become a modern agricultural and eco-tourism hub while ranking among Vietnam’s leaders in advanced agriculture and industry.
