Drone makers need more skilled workers

HCMC – More than 10 domestic companies that are producing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have higher demand for skilled workers in Vietnam’s emerging drone sector.

Vu Anh Tu, director of FPT UAV, told The Saigon Times on March 7 that UAV technology is expanding quickly as drones are used in agriculture, logistics, infrastructure monitoring, and industry. As production and application projects grow, the need for engineers and technical staff is expected to increase.

Some local companies, including units within the FPT ecosystem, are seeking additional engineers for drone and unmanned aviation projects. However, no official statistics on recruitment demand are available as the sector is still new.

Training institutions have begun developing programs to prepare workers for the field.

Duong Trong Phu Son of the FPT International Training Institute said the education system designs new technology programs based on FPT’s technology strategy and consultations with businesses. The drone training program was developed after discussions with companies in the sector.

Providing hands-on training remains a challenge. The institute has partnered with a technology incubator to give students opportunities to test and experience drone applications.

Studies by Markets and Markets and PwC estimate the global UAV market could reach US$128 billion by 2030 and US$700 billion by 2035.

In Vietnam, the low-altitude economy could generate US$10 billion and create one million jobs over the next decade, according to industry projections.
