HCMC – The mandatory transition to E10 biofuel across Vietnam could be implemented ahead of the June 1, 2026 deadline to secure national energy autonomy
This idea was raised by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan during a conference on implementing the biofuel blending roadmap in the new period held in Hanoi today.
As geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East continue to destabilize global oil markets, advancing the biofuel roadmap is, according to speakers at the conference, seen as a vital solution to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and ensure a stable domestic energy supply.
Under Circular 50, the blending of E10 biofuel was originally set to become compulsory by June this year, while E5 RON92 will be maintained until late 2030. However, industry leaders and ministry officials now advocate for an immediate acceleration. Do Van Tuan, chairman of the Vietnam Biofuel Association, said that major fuel distributors have already begun supplying E10 nationwide since August last year, with market presence surging this March.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to conduct preliminary inspections of fuel suppliers this month to evaluate their readiness. Beyond energy security, the push for E10 and higher blends like E15 or E20 aligns with Vietnam’s green transition commitments, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support the domestic agricultural sector by creating stable demand for ethanol (E100) production.
