HCMC – Vietnam’s electricity production and imports are projected to reach 347.5 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2025, up by 12.2% from 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.

The country’s total power capacity, excluding rooftop solar, is expected to rise 6.2% to nearly 83,000 megawatts (MW). The ministry said measures would be taken to ensure sufficient electricity for economic and social needs, particularly during the dry season.

The national electricity output in 2024 is estimated at 309.7 billion kWh, up 10.1% from 2023, exceeding the annual target by 2%.

In 2024, the National Load Dispatch Center was separated from state utility EVN and reorganized as National Power System and Market Operator Company, under the ministry’s management. The move aims to advance electricity market reforms and improve competitiveness.

However, Vietnam’s energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources remains slow, the ministry noted. Infrastructure for a competitive wholesale electricity market is still under development, while power demand continues to grow rapidly.
