Located about 130 kilometers from downtown HCMC, Chu Thap Rock in Dong Nai Province, has become a popular weekend getaway for travelers seeking nature and quiet countryside views.

Locals also call the site Elephant Rock because from a distance, the large gray monolith resembles a sleeping elephant lying in the middle of rice fields. The rock is surrounded by rice fields, lotus ponds, and dirt roads. During the lotus season, typically from May to June, the surrounding ponds bloom with pink and white flowers, creating a striking contrast with the granite block and green fields. Depending on the harvest cycle, visitors may see bright green paddies, golden rice ready for harvest, or bare fields after reaping.

The site is reachable in two to three hours by car or motorbike from HCMC. Motorbike trips appeal to those looking for open-air travel along quiet country roads lined with rice paddies and village houses. Travelers who prefer comfort can opt for cars, either self-driven or shared with groups.

Beyond sightseeing, visitors often climb the rock to take in panoramic views of the area. From the summit, the patchwork of rice fields, village rooftops, and lakes stretches into the distance. However, caution is advised when climbing, particularly in rainy weather, as the surface can be slippery.

Chu Thap Rock has also become a favorite spot to watch sunrise and sunset. Early in the morning, the first rays of light illuminate the rock and nearby fields, while at dusk, the area is bathed in warm colors, attracting photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Camping is another option. Overnight visitors pitch tents near the site, enjoy starry skies, and experience the stillness of the countryside. Photography is one of the main draws, with social media users sharing images taken from lotus ponds, rice fields, and the rock’s peak.

Nearby, tourists can explore other attractions such as Tri An Lake, about 30 kilometers away, which is popular for boating and fishing, and Suoi Mo Park, where streams, waterfalls, and shaded areas provide space for picnics and outdoor activities.

Visitors are advised to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and proper footwear, particularly if planning to climb or stay overnight. Early morning or late afternoon is considered the best time to visit, both for cooler weather and favorable lighting for photos. Travelers are encouraged to avoid littering and to respect the natural surroundings.
