HCMC – Eighteen sections of the eastern North-South Expressway with a total length of around 1,144 kilometers will be expanded to six lanes at an estimated cost of VND152.1 trillion, according to a proposal by Project Management Unit 6.
Under the current plan, the North-South Expressway is 2,063 kilometers long.
Of this, 1,163 kilometers have been or are being built with four lanes. An additional 99 kilometers are already in operation with a fully completed four-lane layout, while 113 kilometers are being widened from four to six lanes.
Project Management Unit 6 has proposed expanding 18 sections of the expressway with public funding, citing increasing transport demand and the need to widen existing narrow sections.
The proposed sections include Mai Son–National Highway 45, National Highway 45–Nghi Son, Nghi Son–Dien Chau, Dien Chau–Bai Vot, Nha Trang–Cam Lam, Cam Lam–Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao–Phan Thiet, and Phan Thiet–Dau Giay.
Some sections, such as My Thuan–Can Tho–Ca Mau, have not been included in this expansion plan due to low transport demand and challenging construction conditions.
Completed sections from the first phase of the North-South expressway will be widened through separate component projects once approved by the authorities.
For the second-phase sections, after they are opened to traffic with four lanes, project adjustments will be made to further expand them to six lanes.
