HCMC – Heavy rain triggered by the Storm Wipha circulation caused severe flooding in the central province of Nghe An, submerging homes, cutting off villages and forcing hundreds to evacuate, reported the local media.
Floodwaters rose to two meters in parts of Ky Son, Tuong Duong, and Con Cuong communes. On July 23, dozens of homes in Muong Xen Commune near the Ca River were inundated, isolating hundreds of residents. Local authorities had relocated some families before the flooding.
In Tuong Duong, floodwaters submerged sections of Hoa Binh Market and nearby roads. The Ban Ve hydropower plant in Yen Na Commune recorded inflows of 12,800 cubic meters per second, several times higher than its design capacity. The plant increased its discharge rate to 4,300 cubic meters per second.
In Con Cuong, hundreds of homes were flooded. Some single-story houses were submerged up to the roof. In Yen Hoa Commune, more than 210 households were cut off after water submerged bridges and roads.
One person was reported missing in Nam Can Commune. Authorities reported damage to 161 houses, two commune offices, and 45 points of landslides along national and provincial roads.
In My Ly Commune, seven villages along the Nam Non River were flooded. Around 20 stilt houses were submerged. Fast-moving water and landslides made access to the area difficult.
A suspension bridge in Que Phong Commune was swept away on July 22. Four spillway bridges and parts of National Road 48D were flooded, prompting local authorities to close access to the affected areas.
Landslides in Tri Le Commune cut off roads to several villages. Thirty households in Tan Thai and ten in Nam Nhong were isolated.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned of further heavy rain in northern and north-central Vietnam. Rainfall could exceed 300 millimeters in some areas, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.
