HCMC – Former President Tran Duc Luong passed away at his residence at 10:51 p.m. on May 20 at the age of 88.
Despite dedicated treatment by doctors and professors, and the care of the Party, State, and his family, he died after a period of illness due to old age, the medical professionals council for cadre health care announced on the evening of May 21.
The memorial, funeral, and burial services for former State President Tran Duc Luong will be announced at a later time.
Tran Duc Luong was born in Pho Khanh Commune, Duc Pho District, Quang Ngai Province on May 5, 1937. He served as an alternate member of the Party Central Committee in the 5th tenure and a full member in the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th tenures.
He was a member of the Politburo Standing Committee in the 8th tenure and a Politburo member in the 9th. He also served as a National Assembly deputy in the 7th, 8th, and 10th legislatures.
He served as State President from September 1997 to June 2006.
During his career and contributions to national development and defense, former President Tran Duc Luong spent many years working in the mining and geology sectors.
He was a co-author of the research project that produced the “1:500,000 Geological Map of Northern Vietnam,” a Soviet-Vietnamese collaboration conducted between 1960 and 1965.
