HCMC – Vietnam’s fresh pomelo now meets the standards for export to South Korea, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Plant Protection Department.

The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of South Korea on July 30 issued import certification for the fruit.

Pomelo is now the third fresh fruit from Vietnam allowed in South Korea, following dragon fruit and mango, opening new opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products to enter international markets, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Negotiations for exporting pomelo began in 2018 but faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In April this year, the Plant Protection Department and APQA agreed on import rules.

Farmers must register with the department, which will monitor the areas to ensure pest control. If the infection rate exceeds 4%, the region may be deemed unqualified.

Packing facilities must meet hygiene standards. The department will inform South Korea of the registered pomelo growing areas, packers, and hot water treatment facilities at the start of the export period.
