HCMC – The first quarter this year saw Vietnam’s exports of fruits and vegetables soaring by 27% over the same period of last year to nearly US$1.25 billion, according to a preliminary report.

The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association (VINAFRUIT) said that in March alone, the export of fruits and vegetables contributed US$433 million, up by nearly 4% from the year-ago period.

This increase in January-March revenue sets a new milestone for fruit and vegetable exports, indicating positive growth prospects, especially in key export markets such as China, South Korea, the U.S., Thailand and Japan.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary of VINAFRUIT, said dragon fruit, banana, mango, and durian contributed significantly to the January-March fruits and vegetables export revenue.

However, the positive export trend was accompanied by increased imports of fruits and vegetables, with Vietnam spending nearly US$500 million between January and March, a 19% rise against last year.
