Over the past 20 years, FV Hospital has built the Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department into a leading ophthalmology center in Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to cooperation with experts around the world and the application of many advanced technologies, FV can treat complex ocular pathologies such as retinal detachment in premature babies, corneal transplantation from imported corneal sources, myopia control for children with AI, etc.
Miraculous surgery saves the ocular of deaf-dumb pediatric patients and congenital heart failure
Minh Thu (5 years old, from Dong Nai Province) has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and is congenitally deaf and dumb. When Thu was 5 years old, her family discovered that she had retinal detachment in both ocular and cataracts, and if she did not have timely surgery, it would lead to the risk of permanent blindness. Dutch ophthalmologist – Jan Dirk Ferwerda – who discovered Thu’s disease, introduced his family to FV Hospital. He believes that only FV has enough facilities and human resources to treat her.
Thu also has congenital heart disease, so the risk of complications during surgery is very high. FV Hospital invited experts in anesthesiology and resuscitation from Children’s Hospital 1 to consult inter-institutional to agree on an intervention plan.

After four consultations, Dr. Ferwerda worked closely with the FV doctors’ team to perform an urgent operation to avoid the risk of possible heart failure. Luckily, the surgery was successful, Thu’s eyes were saved with the joy of her family.
Coordination with international experts to treat ophthalmic diseases for children and adults
Retinal detachment is a common disease in children, especially premature babies. It is estimated that each year Vietnam has about 140,000 premature babies, of which nearly 32% of cases of retinal diseases are recorded. In this group, 32.6% of children are at risk of losing their vision if not detected and treated promptly.
The Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department is one of the ophthalmology centers with enough capacity to screen and treat retinal detachment for newborns. With the advantage of having a team of separate anesthesiologists and resuscitators for Pediatrics and the cooperation of famous Dutch ophthalmologist Dr. Ferwarda, FV has treated hundreds of retinal detachments in infants and children.

Retinal detachment due to diabetic complications is also the leading cause of blindness in adults. At FV, there is a program to screen for diabetic retinopathy using modern equipment, helping the community detect the disease and treat it from an early stage.
This screening helps identify retinal detachment while also detecting other ocular problems such as: abnormal blood vessels, signs of swelling, bleeding or fat deposition on the retina, the formation of new blood vessels and scar tissue, abnormalities in the optic nerve.
In particular, for many years FV has been the only private medical unit in Vietnam with access to imported corneas, providing corneal transplant opportunities for patients without having to wait long.
Since 2016, FV Hospital has cooperated with Professor Doctor Donald Tan – Singaporean Corneal Transplant Master – Former President of the World Corneal Association, a leading expert in treating ocular diseases, to transplant corneas for patients through imported corneal sources. Up to now, more than 150 patients have been successfully operated on by Prof.Dr. Donald Tan for corneal transplant at FV.

Applying advanced technologies to treat refractive errors
With the strength of being an ophthalmic center fully equipped with modern equipment, always updated with the latest technologies, FV Hospital’s Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department provides comprehensive solutions for treating near-far-disordered refractive errors using advanced methods such as Femtosecond Laser surgery to create corneal flaps with laser pulses instead of using mechanical knives, SmartSurface touchless laser surgery, CLEAR surgery without creating corneal flaps.
With presbyopia – a common disease in middle-aged people that affects near vision, FV has a solution to rejuvenate the ocular using PresbyMAX technology, helping patients regain clear vision in just 15 minutes. In particular, PresbyMAX also immediately corrects other refractive errors such as near-far-away disturbances, helping to quickly regain near-satisfactory foresight.
Recently, FV applied the Oculus Myopia Master machine to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to control myopia in children, helping to predict and analyze the level of myopia progression of children until age 18, and at the same time Propose solutions to prevent myopia or slow myopia progression to the maximum extent.
Ophthalmic treatment: Absolute safety is the top priority standard
At FV, the intensive pre-operative examination process with advanced machines helps screen and detect early-stage congenital ocular diseases such as keratoconus or surgical contraindications that machines normally cannot detect it.
The team of experienced doctors is led by Specialist Doctor Level II Nguyen Thi Mai – Head of FV Hospital’s Ophthalmology & Refractive Surgery Department. She is an expert with more than 30 years of experience in the profession, having successfully treated more than 35,000 refractive surgeries.

The examination and treatment process at FV Hospital strictly complies with JCI international standards, putting patient safety first. The operating room environment ensures almost absolute sterility, from air disinfection systems, sterile medical instruments to rigorous infection control procedures.
