Gia Lai renewable energy projects face delays

HCMC – Ten renewable energy projects in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai remain stalled due to regulatory issues.

The affected projects include five wind and five solar power plants, all of which have completed construction but have yet to receive approval for commercial operation, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The Gia Lai Province People’s Committee has reported the issue to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, seeking intervention. The stalled wind projects—Cho Long, Yang Trung, Ia Pech, and the Wind Power Plant for Mountain Development and Processing in the Central Highlands—have not received operational permits. Local authorities attribute the delays to a Government inspection conducted in July 2024.

In response, provincial authorities have urged the Ministry of Industry and Trade to conduct inspections and issue licenses for the wind projects, as they cannot be connected to the national grid without approval.

Meanwhile, Gia Lai has requested that its five solar power projects be reinstated in the national electricity development plan for 2021-2030. The projects—Krong Pa 2, Chu Ngoc-EVNLICOGI 16 (Phase 2), KN Ia Ly-Giga Lai, Phu Thien, and Trang Duc—have a combined capacity of 663 MWp. These projects were excluded from the latest national plan following a Government audit of 154 solar power initiatives.

According to the Gia Lai Department of Industry and Trade, the solar projects had previously been approved under an earlier power development plan. However, regulatory changes and the audit have left them without legal grounds for completion. Provincial officials are calling for a resolution to allow the projects to move forward.
