Gold down, dollar up

HCMC – Domestic gold prices declined sharply on the morning of March 23, with SJC-branded gold bars falling by VND2 million per tael from the close on the weekend, while the U.S. dollar at commercial banks edged up by VND5-9 against the Vietnamese dong.

At 9:00 a.m., Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC), DOJI and Phu Quy quoted SJC-branded gold bars at VND166 million per tael for buying and VND169 million per tael for selling, down VND2 million per tael from the close on the previous session.

Gold ring prices also moved lower. Bao Tin Minh Chau listed plain gold rings at VND166.5 million per tael for buying and VND169.5 million for selling, down VND2.1 million per tael, while Phu Quy quoted them at VND166 million and VND169 million per tael, respectively, down VND2 million compared to the previous close. The spread between buying and selling prices remained wide at around VND3 million per tael.

Globally, gold traded at around US$4,429.6 per ounce, down US$60.6 from the same time in the previous session. At this level, the global gold price was equivalent to around VND140.1 million per tael, about VND28.9 million lower than domestic SJC-branded gold prices.

Silver prices also declined slightly. On the domestic market, Ancarat quoted silver at around VND2.55 million per tael for buying and almost VND2.63 million for selling, down VND2,000 per tael from the previous close. Phu Quy listed silver at about VND2.55 million and some VND2.63 million per tael, respectively, down VND1,000. DOJI quoted silver at VND2.56 million for buying and VND2.65 million for selling, down VND1,000 per tael.

Globally, spot silver traded at US$67.2 per ounce, down US$0.49, or 0.73%, from the previous session.

On the same morning, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) set the central foreign exchange rate at VND25,090 per U.S. dollar, up VND5 from the previous session.

At commercial banks, the U.S. dollar edged up. Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,074 for buying and VND26,344 for selling, up VND5 from the previous close. VietinBank listed the dollar at VND26,112 and VND26,344, respectively, also up VND5. BIDV quoted VND26,104 for buying and VND26,344 for selling, up VND9, while Eximbank traded the currency at VND26,100 and VND26,344, up VND5 compared to the end of last week.
