Gold prices retreat from record levels

HCMC – Domestic gold bar prices dropped by VND200,000 per tael this morning, August 20, pulling back from the record high of VND125 million per tael last recorded on August 18.

As of 9 a.m., Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) quoted its gold bar prcies at VND123.8 million for buying and VND124.8 million for selling, down VND200,000 on both directions compared to the previous peak.

Other dealers such as DOJI and Bao Tin Minh Chau offered similar rates, while Phu Quy Jewelry cut its prices to VND122.8 million for buying and VND124.8 million for selling, also down VND200,000.

Gold rings also edged down. SJC priced its gold rings at VND116.8 million for buying and VND119.3 million for selling.

Phu Quy also adjusted its rates down by VND200,000 to VND116.5 million for buying and VND119.5 million for selling, while Bao Tin Minh Chau kept its prices unchanged at VND117.2 million for buying and VND120.2 million for selling.

Globally, spot gold slipped 0.4% on August 19, standing at US$3,317.71 per ounce as of 0:42 a.m. (Vietnam time) on August 20.

Meanwhile, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) today lifted its central exchange rate by VND8 to VND25,263 per U.S. dollar.

Within the trading band of 5% on either side of the central reference exchange rate, today’s ceiling rate was set at VND26,526 and the floor is at VND24,000 per dollar.

At 8:33 a.m., Vietcombank and BIDV quoted the greenback at VND26,140 for buying and VND26,500 for selling, up VND30 on both ends from yesterday morning.
