Gold prices rise, dollar steady

HCMC – Domestic gold prices rose sharply today, February 9, in line with global gains, with SJC-branded gold bars climbing above VND181 million per tael after a steep decline last week.

Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) raised SJC-branded bar prices by VND1.9 million per tael to VND178.2 million for buying and VND181.1 million for selling. Phu Quy Jewelry also increased prices by VND1.9 million per tael to VND178.2 million for buying and VND181.2 million for selling. At ACB, buying prices for SJC-branded gold bars were lifted by VND3.2 million to VND179.2 million per tael, while selling prices rose by VND2.2 million to VND181.2 million.

Overall, SJC-branded gold bar prices have risen by VND15 million per tael from last week’s low but remain VND10 million lower than the January peak of VND191.3 million per tael.

Ring gold prices also moved higher, increasing by VND1.9–2 million per tael. Phu Quy quoted ring gold at VND177.9 million for buying and VND180.9 million for selling, while SJC listed VND177.7 million and VND180.7 million, respectively. The buy-sell spread in the domestic gold market stayed at around VND3 million per tael.

In the global market, gold prices rose by US$52 per ounce, equivalent to a 1% increase, to US$5,020 per ounce.

Silver prices also rebounded at the start of the week. As of 8:45 a.m. the same day, spot silver stood at US$80.66 per ounce, up 3.81% from the previous close.

In the domestic market, Ancarat Vietnam quoted silver prices at VND3.024 million per tael for buying and VND3.118 million per tael for selling and VND80.64 million per kilogram for buying and VND83.14 million per kilogram for selling, up VND106,000–VND110,000 per tael and VND2.83 million–VND2.93 million per kilogram from late last week.

Phu Quy listed its buying prices at VND3.041 million per tael and selling prices at VND3.135 million per tael and VND81.09 million for buying and VND83.60 million per kilogram for selling, marking weekly increases of up to VND3.85 million per kilogram.

Despite the rebound, domestic silver prices remain about VND40 million per kilogram lower than the peak recorded on January 29.

Meanwhile, U.S. dollar exchange rates at commercial banks were unchanged at the start of the week. On February 9, the State Bank of Vietnam set the central exchange rate at VND25,063 per dollar, down VND2 from the previous week. Vietcombank maintained its buying and selling rates at VND25,760 and VND26,140, respectively, while ACB continued to quote VND25,780 for buying via transfer and VND26,140 for selling.
