Gold slips, dollar steady

HCMC – Domestic gold prices declined on the morning of March 17, with SJC-branded gold bars falling by VND500,000 per tael from the close on March 16, while the U.S. dollar at commercial banks remained unchanged against the Vietnamese dong.

At 9:00 a.m., Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC), Doji and Phu Quy quoted SJC-branded gold bars at VND179.6 million per tael for buying and VND182.6 million for selling, down VND500,000 from the previous session.

Gold rings also edged lower. Bao Tin Minh Chau listed plain gold rings at VND179 million per tael for buying and VND182.6 million for selling, down VND400,000 from March 16. Phu Quy quoted gold rings at VND179.6 million per tael for buying and VND182.6 million for selling, down VND500,000 from the previous close. The spread between buying and selling prices remained at around VND3 million per tael.

Silver prices, however, moved higher in early trade. At 8:39 a.m., Ancarat quoted silver at VND3.041 million per tael for buying and VND3.135 million for selling, up VND65,000–67,000 from March 16. Silver priced per kilogram was listed at VND81.09 million–VND83.6 million, up VND1.73–1.8 million from the previous session.

Phu Quy listed silver at VND3.04 million per tael for buying and VND3.14 million for selling, up VND60,000–62,000. Silver per kilogram was quoted at VND81.17 million–VND83.68 million, up VND1.6–1.65 million from March 16.

Globally, gold traded at around US$5,019 per ounce, up US$14.4 from the same time in the previous session. Silver traded at US$81.4 per ounce, up US$0.41. Converted at Vietcombank’s exchange rate, the global gold price was equivalent to about VND159.2 million per tael, around VND23.4 million lower than domestic SJC-branded gold.

On the same morning, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) kept the central foreign exchange rate unchanged from the previous session.

At commercial banks, the U.S. dollar was steady. Vietcombank quoted the greenback at VND26,081 for buying and VND26,321 for selling, unchanged from March 16. ACB listed the dollar at VND26,110 for buying and VND26,321 for selling, also unchanged from the previous session.
