HCMC – Google Maps has started updating new administrative boundaries in Vietnam, with a nationwide rollout underway following the country’s administrative restructuring.
On the morning of March 18, users reported that the application had begun displaying updated administrative divisions without requiring a version update. Searches for localities such as Gia Lai and Lam Dong show new configurations, with Gia Lai merged from the former Gia Lai and Binh Dinh, and Lam Dong incorporating the former Lam Dong, Binh Thuan and Dak Nong.
The update has not been fully synchronized nationwide. Some areas still show previous boundaries or return no results, while district-level and commune-level data remain largely unchanged.
The rollout comes more than eight months after Vietnam reorganized its administrative system, reducing the number of provinces and centrally governed cities from 63 to 34.
According to documents on IssueTracker, Google began implementing the changes in mid-February to better reflect Vietnam’s address system. The update is being carried out in phases and may affect features such as search, place suggestions and information display.
