HCMC – The Hai Van 2 Tunnel connecting Thua Thien-Hue Province and Danang City was opened to traffic today, January 11, and will remain operational during the upcoming lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, but will be closed later as the State has yet to disburse VND1.18 trillion for the project.

Deo Ca Investment JSC, the investor of the project, today coordinated with the Ministry of Transport and the governments of Thua Thien-Hue Province and Danang City to inaugurate the tunnel, which is 6.2 kilometers long. If the approaching road is included, the length is 12.4 kilometers. It is the longest road tunnel in Southeast Asia, Tuoi Tre Online newspaper reported.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said the project is meaningful to the central key economic zone, helping link to the East-West Economic Corridor.

Ho Minh Hoang, chairman of Deo Ca Group, the parent company of Deo Ca Investment JSC, said the Hai Van 2 Tunnel faced certain technical difficulties.

During the project’s execution, the investor adopted technical and technological solutions to ensure traffic safety on the Hai Van 1 Tunnel, which was opened to traffic in 2005.
