An emerald lake, suspended on the cave wall and surrounded by a unique stalactite system, creates a mesmerizing scene inside Thung Cave, part of the Hung Thoong cave system in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.
The lake was first discovered in May this year by a survey team from Jungle Boss Company Limited. It is located about 15 meters above the main underground river system in Thung Cave. Due to its unique position, the survey team named it Lo Lung Lake, meaning the Hanging Lake.
Lo Lung Lake is situated about one kilometer from the Thung Cave’s entrance, with a surface area estimated to be several hundred square meters. It is considered the deepest lake in Thung Cave, with its water level remaining stable even during the dry season. According to the survey team, the bottom of the lake is likely close to the water level of the main underground river in Thung Cave, which is about ten meters deep. Due to the lake’s significant depth and the overhanging stalactite formations creating challenging terrain, the cave exploration team is still facing difficulties in fully exploring the lake.
The lake is surrounded by stalactite columns. Particularly, within the lake, there is a stalactite formation hanging above the water’s surface. This rare type of stalactite requires numerous influencing factors, including repeated formation and breaking processes, to develop in such a unique location.
Currently, there is only a single narrow way leading to Lo Lung Lake, requiring the use of specialized safety equipment due to its challenging terrain. The journey to explore Lo Lung Lake includes a diverse array of activities such as mountain climbing, rappelling, navigating through cave water, and discovering intricate cave formations. To participate in this journey, travelers must ensure they have sufficient physical fitness and trekking experience.
