HCMC – The Hanoi City government has approved a construction plan for Metro Line No. 5, which will connect Van Cao in downtown Hanoi and Hoa Lac on the city’s western outskirts.
Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Duong Duc Tuan has signed Decision No. 4602, approving the route plan and station locations for the new line, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The plan, prepared in 2025 by the Hanoi Urban Planning Institute and appraised by the Department of Planning and Architecture, is projected to cost more than VND65.4 trillion, with funding to come entirely from the city’s budget.
The main line will run 39.6 kilometers from the intersection of Van Cao and Hoang Hoa Tham streets to Thach Binh Station in Hoa Lac. Two additional branches with a combined length of 4.8 kilometers will connect to Depot No. 1 in Son Dong and Duong Hoa communes, and Depot No. 2 in Hoa Lac Commune.
Metro Line No. 5 will feature 20 stations, including six underground, three elevated, and 11 at ground level. Most of the stations will be located along Thang Long Avenue and the Hoa Lac–Hoa Binh Expressway.
According to the approved design, the underground section will stretch from Van Cao through Lieu Giai, Nguyen Chi Thanh, and Tran Duy Hung streets, while ground-level and elevated tracks will begin near the National Convention Center and continue toward Hoa Lac.
The capital city has tasked the Department of Planning and Architecture with reviewing and verifying the drawings. Meanwhile, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board will publicize the plan and set boundary markers, with local authorities responsible for land management in affected areas.
