HCMC — The People’s Council of Hanoi City has approved a road project worth nearly VND33 trillion to connect the city with the planned Gia Binh International Airport, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The project will be developed under a public-private partnership using a build–transfer contract. Sun Group proposed the investment. The construction period is expected to run from 2025 to 2026.

The capital city will allocate about 723.3 hectares of land in Phu Dong and Thuan An communes as payment to the investor.

The route will run through Thuan An, Phu Dong, Thu Lam, and Dong Anh communes in Hanoi City, and Tu Son and Phu Khe wards in Bac Ninh Province. The new section will be seven kilometers long and 120 meters wide, linking Bac Ninh to the interchanges with the Hanoi–Ha Long Expressway and the Hanoi–Thai Nguyen Expressway, also known as Ring Road 3.

A 6.55-kilometer section overlapping the Hanoi–Thai Nguyen Expressway will be widened to 120 meters. A branch connecting to the Tu Lien Bridge approach will have two directions, each with three lanes, measuring 14 meters in width and 2.5 kilometers in length.

The road is planned to support transport capacity around the future airport and improve regional connectivity.

Gia Binh International Airport will cover 1,884 hectares, including 957 hectares for civil aviation and 927 hectares for a shared-use airfield. By 2030, the airport is planned to operate two runways and handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo annually. Its capacity is expected to increase to four runways, 50 million passengers, and 2.5 million tons of cargo by 2050.

The airport project will require an estimated VND195.1 trillion. Investor equity will account for 15%, or VND29.3 trillion, while the remaining 85% will be financed through other sources.
