Hanoi reviews plan for three major bridges over Red River

Must read

HCMC – Hanoi City is reviewing a proposal to construct three major bridges—Tu Lien, Ngoc Hoi and Tran Hung Dao—spanning the Red River.

The proposal, presented by the Hanoi People’s Committee at a regular meeting chaired by the city’s chairman on February 11, seeks approval from the Hanoi People’s Council for these key infrastructure projects.

According to a city government statement, the plan would help ease traffic congestion and boost socio-economic development on both sides of the Red River.

The VND19-trillion Tu Lien Bridge project is expected to get off the ground by late May 2025. As one of nine planned crossings over the Red River, the bridge will connect Nghi Tam Street to Truong Sa Road, reducing congestion and promoting regional economic growth. The city’s Department of Transport is expediting investment procedures to ensure construction begins on schedule.

Hanoi is seeking approval from the Prime Minister to oversee the projects under the Public Investment Law enacted on November 29, 2024. The city has also requested central Government support to cover at least 50% of the construction costs for the main bridges and their connecting roads.

The Ngoc Hoi Bridge, starting in Thanh Tri District, Hanoi, and extending to Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province, will have a total length of 7.5 km. The total estimated cost of the project is VND11.77 trillion, sourced from municipal and central budgets. The project will be divided into six components, with the main bridge and connecting roads accounting for some VND10.2 trillion.

The Tran Hung Dao Bridge, expected to cost over VND16 trillion, will link Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, and Long Bien districts, spanning a total length of 5.6 km. The project will start at the intersection of Tran Hung Dao and Tran Thanh Tong streets in Hoan Kiem District and end at Nguyen Van Linh Highway in Long Bien District. Like Tu Lien Bridge, construction is slated to begin in May 2025.
