CAN THO – Traffic on the 73-kilometer Hau Giang–Ca Mau section of the Can Tho–Ca Mau Expressway was suspended from 1 p.m. on March 16 to allow contractors to complete remaining construction items.
Le Duc Tuan, deputy director of the My Thuan Project Management Board, confirmed the closure to The Saigon Times, saying that the suspension is expected to last about one month but could end earlier if work is finished ahead of schedule.
According to Tuan, the main expressway route had been largely completed before the Lunar New Year. Authorities temporarily opened the section to traffic during the holiday travel peak. The route is now closed again to complete auxiliary works.
The My Thuan Project Management Board said that several items still require construction, including slope reinforcement and cement concrete shoulders.
During the suspension, vehicles traveling from Can Tho to Ca Mau can use the Can Tho–Hau Giang Expressway to the IC5 interchange and exit to National Highway 61. Drivers may also travel via the Quan Lo–Phung Hiep route or National Highway 1A.
The Hau Giang–Ca Mau section is part of the eastern North–South Expressway project for the 2021–2025 period. It was temporarily opened to traffic on January 19, 2026 to serve travel demand during the Lunar New Year holiday and mark the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The Can Tho–Ca Mau Expressway is nearly 111 kilometers long and designed with four lanes, with total investment exceeding VND27.5 trillion. The project includes two sections: the 37.65-kilometer Can Tho–Hau Giang section and the more than 73-kilometer Hau Giang–Ca Mau section.
