HCMC – The relocation of over 34,600 households along HCMC’s sprawling canal network and the development of the riverside Thanh Da area will be done as part of the city’s urban facelift.

This dual-track plan, outlined in the HCMC government’s latest directives, aims to terminate decades of precarious living conditions and deteriorating infrastructure.

According to a comprehensive survey by the HCMC Institute for Development Studies, approximately 42,790 plots are slated for clearance, with 34,612 households already surveyed to facilitate large-scale environmental and landscape restoration projects across former districts such as 7, 8, Binh Thanh, Can Gio and Nha Be.

The chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee has recently approved the survey report. The institute is mandated to hand over all survey documents and data to the relevant ward and commune authorities by March 20 to facilitate administrative management and project implementation.

In addition, the renovation of Thanh Da residential area in Binh Quoi Ward will be also carried out as 165 households have officially reached a consensus on compensation and relocation packages. In this specific project, the developer has offered a compensation rate of VND52 million per square meter, supplemented by coefficients for different floor levels.

To ensure stability during the relocation, the city has committed to a monthly temporary housing allowance of VND12 million per household, alongside additional subsidies for vulnerable groups and families with meritorious service.

The municipal leadership has instructed the Department of Construction to prioritize “better or equal” living standards for resettled citizens by developing high-quality social housing and resettlement funds. By integrating technical audits of canal-side dwellings with specific redevelopment milestones like those in Thanh Da, HCMC aims to synchronize economic development with environmental improvement, ensuring a transparent and dialogue-driven transition towards a more resilient urban ecosystem by 2030.
