HCMC – HCMC and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province will join forces to develop their coastal infrastructure to establish themselves as a leading maritime economic hub in Southeast Asia.
This is part of the central Government’s strategic plan, outlined in Decision No. 1117/QD-TTg by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, focusing on sustainable coastal resource management from 2021 to 2023, with a vision to 2050.
The key areas of development include port logistics, oil and gas, petrochemicals, marine tourism, and seafood.
Both localities will invest in upgrading coastal infrastructure, including the expansion of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai and Sao Mai-Ben Dinh port complexes, as well as the international transshipment port in Can Gio District. These upgrades aim to position these ports as significant international transshipment hubs in Asia.
The Government also plans to create a free-trade zone around the Cai Mep Ha port to foster an industrial-services ecosystem. The strategy also emphasizes the development of eco-tourism and high-quality recreational services to further boost the maritime economy.
The management of coastal resources will prioritize national defense and environmental conservation, followed by economic development. Maritime tourism and services will take precedence economically, followed by shipping, oil and gas, and fisheries. The plan also includes the promotion of renewable energy and emerging industries.
Authorities will regularly review and adjust resource usage priorities based on local and ministerial proposals, ensuring that economic, social, and environmental impacts are taken into account.
