HCMC – The HCMC Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board on November 18 commenced work on two key construction packages under the long-awaited Xuyen Tam Canal rehabilitation project, aiming to improve drainage, environmental conditions, and transport connectivity along the nearly 9-kilometer waterway.
The XL-01 package covers a 2.94-kilometer section from the Nhieu Loc–Thi Nghe Canal to Bui Dinh Tuy Bridge, with a contract value of more than VND1.16 trillion.
The XL-02 package extends over 4.5 kilometers from Bui Dinh Tuy Bridge to Luong Ngoc Quyen Street and is valued at VND1.21 trillion.
In May, the XL-03 package, spanning 1.3 kilometers, began construction and is expected to be completed in November 2026.
Contractors have mobilized manpower and machinery and are coordinating with relevant agencies to keep the project on schedule. The entire upgrade is planned for completion in 2028.
Approved by the HCMC People’s Council in 2022, the Xuyen Tam Canal project requires a total of more than VND17 trillion. The project entails dredging the canal, building protective embankments, installing a wastewater collection system, constructing roads along both sides, and developing parks, green spaces, and lighting systems.
This year, the project was allocated VND1.8 trillion in public investment capital, though disbursement has reached only around 50% to date. City leaders urged contractors to accelerate both construction and disbursement, while asking ward authorities to finalize site clearance and handover within November to avoid further delays.
