HCMC – Work has commenced on a VND1-trillion pedestrian bridge linking Bach Dang Park in downtown HCMC and the riverside park in Thu Thiem New Urban Area, Thu Duc City across the Saigon River.

The groundbreaking ceremony was jointly organized this morning (March 29) by the HCMC People’s Committee and project funder Nutifood. The bridge will have a total length of around 720 meters, a width of six to 11 meters, and a vertical clearance of 10 meters to allow waterway traffic.

The bridge’s design was selected through an international architectural competition. The winning concept, by Chodai-Takashi Niwa and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam, draws inspiration from nipa palm leaves, a cultural symbol of southern Vietnam. Its contemporary and elegant design complements the city’s skyline.

Funded entirely by Nutifood, the project is not subject to Vietnam’s investment regulations governing public infrastructure. The HCMC Department of Transport collaborated with relevant agencies to develop a streamlined implementation process.

This steel arch bridge will feature spacious pedestrian pathways, resting areas, and scenic viewpoints. Flexible median strips will provide space for public events and cultural activities. Modern lighting, shaded walkways, and advanced drainage systems will ensure a safe and comfortable experience for visitors.

Construction began a month ahead of schedule, with the project targeted for completion by April 30, 2026.

The pedestrian bridge is expected to become a new cultural landmark, enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism along the Saigon River waterfront.
