HCMC breaks ground on second waste-to-energy plant

The Saigon Times

Must read

HCMC – VietStar JSC today began work on a waste-to-energy plant at the Northwest Solid Waste Treatment Complex in Cu Chi District, marking HCMC’s second facility of its kind.

The VietStar Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Treatment Plant will have a daily processing capacity of 2,000 tons.

The facility will use advanced integrated technology, combining waste sorting for compost production with incineration for power generation.

It will employ Martin grate incineration technology from Germany and is expected to generate 40 kW of electricity while ensuring zero wastewater discharge.

The project aligns with the city’s environmental protection strategy, which aims to transition all waste treatment processes to incineration for power generation by 2030.

This strategy also promotes the recycling of organic waste into fertilizer and biofuel while implementing stricter controls on water, air, and industrial waste pollution.

According to the resolution of the HCMC Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term, the city aims to process at least 80% of municipal solid waste using waste-to-energy and recycling technologies by 2025, with a target of 100% by 2030.

Currently, most waste in the city is still disposed of in landfills, posing significant environmental risks.

To address this, the HCMC People’s Committee has been expediting the transition to modern waste treatment technologies, removing regulatory obstacles, and facilitating approvals for qualified enterprises to develop waste-to-energy plants.
