HCMC – The Ministry of Transport plans to begin work on the HCMC-Can Tho railway before 2030, with an estimated investment of nearly US$10 billion.
The railway will have a total length of 175 kilometers, starting from An Binh in Binh Duong Province and ending in Cai Rang District, Can Tho City. It will pass through six provinces, including HCMC, Long An, Tien Giang, and Vinh Long.
The project will be developed in two phases. In the first phase, a single-track line will be constructed along the full 175.2-kilometer route. Of this, 76.6 kilometers will be built on embankments, while bridges, including viaducts and river crossings, will cover the remaining 98.6 kilometers.
With a track gauge of 1,435 mm, the railway will support speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour for passenger trains and 120 kilometers per hour for freight.
The preliminary total investment in the first phase is estimated at around VND173.6 trillion (US$7.16 billion), with compensation, support, and resettlement costs accounting for around VND45.7 trillion.
Phase 2 will involve upgrading the railway to a double-track system, requiring an estimated VND64.97 trillion (US$2.7 billion).
The total investment in both phases is projected at VND238.6 trillion (US$9.84 billion), with funding sourced from public investment.
