HCMC – The 30-kilometer Tham Luong–Ben Cat–Nuoc Len channel upgrading project, which spans seven districts in HCMC, has been only 37.9% complete after nearly two years of construction despite the completion date was initially scheduled for next year, local media reported.
The VND8.2 trillion project comprises 10 construction packages. The section from Cho Cau Bridge to Truong Dai Bridge has shown the most progress at 46.62%, while another section from Truong Dai Bridge to the Saigon River is lagging behind at 22%.
Initially scheduled for completion by April 2025, the project has encountered several delays due to various challenges. One major issue is land encroachment by local residents, which has slowed progress and required additional resource allocation.
Another obstacle involves the disposal of excavated soil and mud, much of which remains stockpiled on-site. Disagreements among local residents and agencies regarding the use of designated disposal sites have complicated efforts to implement the original plan.
The project investor is now exploring alternative solutions, including reusing non-hazardous materials for public works.
Rising material costs and rainy weather conditions in southern Vietnam have further disrupted the project timeline.
The project is a vital part of HCMC’s urban development strategy, passing through the districts of Binh Chanh, Binh Tan, 6, Tan Phu, Tan Binh, Go Vap, and 12.
