HCMC – HCMC produces around 14,000 tons of household waste each day, with most of it collected but still largely sent to landfills, reported the local media.
The former HCMC generates 10,500 tons daily, while the former provinces of Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau contribute 2,400 and 1,100 tons, respectively, according to the Department of Agriculture and Environment.
Nearly all of the waste is collected and treated. About 40% is processed through incineration, composting, or recycling, while the rest is buried in sanitary landfills.
HCMC operates four major waste treatment facilities covering more than 1,670 hectares. Three more sites, totaling 750 hectares, are being developed. Another six smaller projects are planned across various areas.
The department said waste management still faces challenges. Upgrading transfer stations takes time due to technical requirements and funding constraints. Many private contractors also struggle to modernize equipment because of limited resources.
The city has been improving administrative procedures and using more digital tools in environmental management. The department reported that 99% of urban areas have their wastewater treated to standard, and all residents have access to clean water. It added that wastewater treatment systems in industrial and export zones have reached full compliance.
