HCMC – HCMC has approved a plan to upgrade and expand the East Cu Chi Canal irrigation system at a cost of more than VND2.25 trillion, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The project will be funded by the city’s budget and carried out from 2025 to 2030. The city aims to complete the work by 2030. The city’s Management Board for Agricultural Infrastructure and Rural Development will serve as the investor.

The upgrade will cover more than 30 kilometers of the canal, stretching from the Ben Muong weir to the An Ha Bridge area.

The East Cu Chi Canal provides irrigation and drainage for over 25,000 hectares of land in the city’s northwest, including areas that were part of former districts Cu Chi, Hoc Mon and 12. It also links to a regional system that supplies water from the Dau Tieng Reservoir to HCMC and nearby areas.

The project is expected to improve water supply for agriculture, support drainage for residential and industrial zones, and help reduce flooding during the rainy season. It is part of HCMC’s urban agricultural development strategy through 2030, which identifies East Cu Chi Canal as one of three key irrigation corridors in the city.
