HCMC – The HCMC People’s Council has approved a comprehensive plan to develop an urban railway system during its 17th session held on July 17.
The two-and-a-half-day session concluded with the passage of 38 resolutions addressing key issues for the city’s development in the next six months and beyond.
Duong Ngoc Hai, vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee, emphasized the necessity of investing in an urban railway system to implement Party policies and align with regional infrastructure development strategies. He referred to the Politburo’s Conclusion No. 49-KL/TW, which outlines the development of Vietnam’s rail transport through 2030, with a vision extending to 2045.
HCMC considers urban rail the backbone of its urban transportation infrastructure. The city plans to develop the system in phases, focusing on strategic goals and available resources. The plan aims to complete six urban rail lines, totaling about 183 kilometers, by 2035. This network is expected to handle 40-50% of commuter needs, serving seven to eight million commuters daily.
By 2045, the city plans to extend the network by an additional 168 kilometers, bringing the total length to over 351 kilometers. By 2060, further investments will expand the network to a total of 510 kilometers.
The development of the urban rail system is seen as a crucial step towards transforming HCMC’s transportation infrastructure and supporting sustainable urban growth.
