HCMC – HCMC plans to develop a 176-kilometer road along the Saigon River, with a key section in the city center to be funded by the state budget.

The HCMC Department of Construction said the project includes two main routes. The first, originally planned before the merger of former HCMC, former Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau provinces, will stretch 78.2 km from Tay Ninh Province to former Can Gio District. It will have four to eight lanes.

Authorities are preparing to invest in a 1.95-km section between Ba Son and Saigon bridges. The road will be 31 to 33 meters wide and funded by the city budget. It will start at Ton Duc Thang Street in former District 1 and end at the Tan Cang area in former Binh Thanh District, passing through several high-end urban areas.

The riverside road is expected to form a north-south traffic corridor through the city, helping ease congestion and improving links with regional infrastructure. It will connect with Beltways 2, 3 and 4, and major expressways including Ben Luc–Long Thanh and HCMC–Moc Bai.

The project is also intended to support urban expansion and improve logistics. It will connect to former Binh Duong Province via several bridges and open new land for development along the river.

The HCMC Department of Construction said the road will not only serve transport needs but also facilitate new urban development, stimulate commercial and service activities, and enhance riverside landscapes. It is expected to attract both domestic and international tourism.

Land along the route will be available for development after the road is completed, potentially generating significant revenue for local budgets to support reinvestment and infrastructure expansion.

The second route is 98.2 km long, running through the former Binh Duong area and starting from the former district of Dau Tieng to the former Thu Duc City. The road will be 32 meters wide and is slated for construction between 2025 and 2030.

This section is designed to reduce traffic on National Highway 13 and link with river ports and logistics hubs. Some segments, including those in the former cities of Thu Dau Mot and Thuan An, have already begun investment procedures. Others will be expanded to meet freight demand.

Parts of the route are being developed through public-private partnerships, particularly in transit-oriented zones and new urban projects in the former Ben Cat area.
