HCMC – Metro Line No. 1, which connects Ben Thanh Market and Suoi Tien Theme Park, has recorded ridership figures nearly 300% higher than projected during its first two weeks of operation.
From December 22, 2024 to January 5, 2025, the urban rail line carried over 1.7 million passengers, significantly surpassing the anticipated 575,000, reported the Vietnam News Agency.
The line’s operator, HCMC Urban Railways No. 1 Company Limited (HURC1), ran 3,029 train trips during this period, with ridership peaking on January 1 at 275,144 passengers—the highest daily total to date.
The service, which offers free rides throughout its first month, has attracted overwhelming support from residents and tourists alike. Initially, HURC1 planned 200 daily train trips, expecting to serve around 39,000 passengers. However, the unexpected surge in demand prompted the addition of extra trains and extended operating hours, particularly during the New Year holiday.
Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception, reports of passengers flouting metro etiquette have emerged. Incidents include blocking doors, jumping onto trains as they close, and misusing priority facilities. In response, HURC1 has increased staff presence at stations and made operational adjustments to address these issues.
The company remains focused on maintaining order and ensuring a smooth experience for all riders.
