HCMC — A low-pressure system in the East Sea is forecast to strengthen into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

The system is moving west and may intensify, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the northern East Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands, and the central and southern East Sea. Coastal areas from Binh Dinh to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang, and the Gulf of Thailand will also be affected.

Tornadoes and strong gusts at levels 6-7, along with waves exceeding two meters, are expected. Southwest winds in some areas could reach level 6, with gusts at level 7-8. Sea conditions will be rough with waves of 1.5 to 3 meters. The maritime weather risk warning is set at level 1.

Fishing boats and vessels operating in these areas are at high risk of severe weather impacts.

On land, heavy rainfall was recorded in Lai Chau and Dien Bien provinces on Monday morning (June 9). Rainfall measured 60.2 millimeters in Nam Ban and 62.6 millimeters in Pa Ham. Soil moisture in some areas has reached or exceeded 85%, indicating saturation.

More rain is forecast for the next three to six hours, with cumulative rainfall expected to range from 20 to 40 millimeters, and over 60 millimeters in some areas. Flash floods and landslides are possible in small rivers, streams, and on steep slopes. High-risk areas include Muong Te, Nam Nhun, Sin Ho, and Than Uyen in Lai Chau, and Muong Cha, Tua Chua, and Tuan Giao in Dien Bien.
