HCMC — Heavy rain on August 21 caused flooding and landslides in Bac Ninh Province, cutting off traffic in several areas and forcing emergency alerts.

Data from the Vrain automated monitoring system showed Bac Ninh recorded 140 millimeters of rainfall by 8 a.m., the highest in the region, followed by Tuyen Quang with 122 millimeters and Thai Nguyen with 115 millimeters.

In Tay Yen Tu Commune, floodwaters submerged all 16 spillways across three villages, isolating residents. Homes in Thong Nhat Village were also inundated.

Authorities in Son Dong, Yen Dinh, Tuan Dao, and Dai Son communes evacuated residents near rivers, streams, and landslide-prone areas as water levels rose. Landslides were reported along National Highway 31 and Provincial Road 291, posing risks to motorists.

In Tuan Dao Commune, floodwaters damaged farmland and strong currents threatened low-lying areas. Local forces were mobilized for emergency response.

No casualties were reported. Authorities warned residents to avoid crossing flooded spillways, relocate from vulnerable areas, and monitor weather updates.

Meteorological agencies said heavy rain is expected to continue in the northern midland and delta regions, including Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and possibly Hanoi and Hung Yen. Central Vietnam remains mostly dry, but localized thunderstorms may develop in the late afternoon. Heavy rains are also forecast from Gia Lai Province to the southern provinces, including the Central Highlands, due to moist easterly winds.
