HCMC – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has approved loans totaling over 102 billion yen, equivalent to US$678 million, for Vietnam in the last fiscal year. This marks the highest level of Official Development Assistance (ODA) for the country over the past six years.

The funding includes 5.2 billion yen (US$35 million) for technical assistance and 1.1 billion yen (US$7.5 million) for non-refundable aid, according to the chief representative of JICA Vietnam Office at a mid-term press conference held on October 17.

JICA’s support for Vietnam focuses on three key areas: high-quality growth, assistance for vulnerable groups, and human resource development.

Among the notable projects contributing to high-quality growth are the Binh Hung wastewater treatment plant in HCMC, which was inaugurated in August, and the Metro Line No. 1 project in the same city, which has started trial operations.

JICA has also provided emergency aid to 2,000 households in Yen Bai Province affected by recent floods. Additionally, the agency is developing plans to mitigate risks from flash floods and landslides in Son La and other northern mountainous provinces.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Vietnam-Japan University. JICA is collaborating with the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences to produce a specialized textbook for students, which is expected to be published soon.
