HCMC – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has granted more than VND9.1 billion in non-refundable aid to Can Tho City to enhance its drainage system and boost climate resilience, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The Can Tho People’s Committee has approved the technical cooperation project titled “Technical Cooperation in Drainage to Enhance Climate Change Resilience in Can Tho City.” The three-year project will run from October 2025 to September 2028, with the city’s Department of Construction serving as the implementing agency.

The project is fully funded and managed by JICA, with no counterpart contribution required from the Vietnamese side.

According to representatives from Fukuoka City’s Bureau of Road and Sewerage, the project will apply Fukuoka’s experience in urban drainage management to address three key issues in Can Tho: flood damage and untreated wastewater discharge, inefficient operation of wastewater treatment plants, and the need to connect private drainage systems to public infrastructure.

The initiative aims to strengthen flood control and improve water quality in Can Tho, contributing to the city’s sustainable urban development.

Fukuoka has adopted a water-efficient urban model that promotes the reuse of treated water, applies advanced treatment technologies to improve water quality, and strengthens citywide flood prevention systems. At present, 99.9% of its residents are served by wastewater treatment facilities.
