Khanh Hoa leverages tech to combat illegal fishing

HCMC – The south-central province of Khanh Hoa has implemented an electronic catch documentation and traceability system (eCDT) to streamline entry and exit procedures and facilitate catch reporting for local fishermen.

Through the eCDT system, fishermen can submit necessary paperwork, such as catch reports, via a mobile app. Nearly 200 accounts have been registered on the eCDT platform, and hundreds of officials and fishing boat owners have been trained to use it.

Kiosks at several ports also allow fishermen to complete paperwork on-site, with over 3,000 vessels having completed entry and exit procedures through the system.

The data collected through eCDT helps monitor fishing activities and supports efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The system is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to meet European Commission (EC) requirements, following the EC’s issuance of a “yellow card” warning to Vietnam’s fishing industry and seafood exports to the European Union in October 2017.

Nguyen Trong Chanh, deputy director of the Khanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, noted that the eCDT system will provide key data for the upcoming fifth EC inspection.
