HCMC – The National Assembly (NA) elected Le Minh Tri as chief justice of the Supreme People’s Court for the 2021-2026 term.

The resolution on the election of the 64-year-old was approved unanimously by all 438 deputies present at the 8th extraordinary session of the 15th NA held today, August 26.

Before his election, Tri served as prosecutor general of the Supreme People’s Procuracy from April 2016 to August 2024. The NA also passed a resolution relieving him from that role before voting him in as chief justice.

Tri succeeds Nguyen Hoa Binh, who was relieved of his duties as chief justice earlier in the session. Nguyen Hoa Binh, who served two terms in the role, was earlier today appointed by the NA as Deputy Prime Minister at the request of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Tri, a native of HCMC’s Cu Chi District, holds degrees in security studies and law. He previously held various positions, including vice chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee and deputy head of the Internal Affairs Commission of the Party Central Committee.

Under the current law, the chief justice of the Supreme People’s Court is elected, dismissed, or removed by the NA based on recommendations by the President of the nation. The chief justice’s term aligns with the National Assembly’s term.

The role involves organizing court proceedings and ensuring judges and jurors operate independently and adhere strictly to the law. The chief justice also chairs the Supreme People’s Court’s Council of Justices and advises the President on clemency requests from death row inmates.

The Supreme People’s Court currently has five deputy chief justices, including Nguyen Tri Tue, Nguyen Van Du, Duong Van Thang, Nguyen Van Tien, and Pham Quoc Hung.
