HCMC – Le Thanh Van, a 60-year-old National Assembly (NA) deputy, has been expelled from the Communist Party of Vietnam for allegedly abusing his position and authority to influence others for personal gains, said local media reports.

At its 43rd session held from July 15 to 16, the Central Inspection Commission reviewed the proposal regarding the disciplinary action against multiple Party members, including lawmaker Le Thanh Van.

Van was found to have exhibited political, moral and lifestyle degradation, as well as have violated Party rules and State laws on the execution of their assigned duties and tasks, particularly in anti-corruption.

He violated regulations on what Party members are prohibited from doing and their responsibility to act as role models, resulting in serious consequences and adversely affecting the credibility of the Party, government agencies and units.

Given his wrongdoings and shortcomings, the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission decided to expel him from the Party.

Last week, Van was detained on allegations of abusing his position and authority to influence others for personal gains as part of a broader investigation into the case involving another NA deputy, Luu Binh Nhuong.

At the session, the Central Inspection Committee also reviewed the results of the inspection for signs of violations and conducted a review, recommending disciplinary action against the Party Civil Affairs Committee of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee.

The Party Civil Affairs Committee of the An Giang Provincial People’s Committee violated the principles of democratic centralism and lacked responsibility, allowing the People’s Committee and several organizations and individuals to violate Party regulations and State laws. These violations occurred in the management and exploitation of resources and minerals in the province; resulting in some officials and Party members being disciplined and prosecuted.

The primary entities held accountable are the Standing Committee of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee for the 2015-2020 and 2020-2025 terms; the Party Civil Affairs Committee for the 2016-2021 and 2021-2026 terms; and the Party delegation of the An Giang Provincial People’s Council for the 2016-2021 term.

Therefore, the Central Inspection Committee decided to give warnings to the Party Civil Affairs Committee of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee for the 2016-2021 and 2021-2026 terms, and multiple officials in the province.

It also proposed that the competent authorities consider and impose disciplinary action on the Standing Committee of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee for the 2015-2020 and 2020-2025 terms.
