HCMC – The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is preparing for potentially severe flooding due to high tides, compounded by possible heavy rainfall.
According to the Mekong River Commission in Vietnam, at-risk areas include Can Tho City, Vinh Long Province, and central parts of the Ca Mau Peninsula. Rainfall across the Mekong basin is expected to be 3-5% higher than average for the first half of November.
Reservoirs along China’s Lancang River upstream the Mekong are nearing 95% capacity while reservoirs in the lower Mekong basin have reached about 80% capacity.
In Vietnam, water levels at Tan Chau station in Tay Ninh Province are projected to reach 2.4-2.8 meters, above seasonal averages. Chau Doc station in An Giang Province is expected to see levels between 2.2 and 2.5 meters.
Local governments have been advised to implement anti-flooding measures to mitigate potential damage.
