HCMC – The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have convened to discuss drafting a proposal for the Government to establish a National Rice Council.

The virtual meeting, co-hosted by Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan and Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien on August 6, included leaders from key rice growing areas such as An Giang, Kien Giang, Dong Thap, Thai Binh, and Nam Dinh.

Under the draft proposal, the National Rice Council will serve as an interdisciplinary coordinating organization that provides consultations to the prime minister. The council will study and present strategies and mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness and stability of the rice industry.

Given the numerous challenges facing the rice industry, such as climate change, the depletion of natural resources, and market volatility both locally and globally, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized the need for an effective mechanism among ministries, agencies, and localities. This mechanism aims to oversee the general activities of the industry, supplementing the specific management duties of the Ministries of Industry and Trade and Agriculture and Rural Development.

During the meeting, ministerial leaders instructed responsible agencies to gather opinions and finalize the draft to ensure the proposal could be submitted to the prime minister for consideration this month.
