HCMC – Bui Thi Hoai Anh, director of Maritime Bank’s (MSB) Thanh Xuan branch in Hanoi City, has been detained on suspicion of misappropriating assets worth VND338 billion from many customers.
Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, March 28, Major General Nguyen Thanh Tung, deputy director of the Hanoi City Police Department, said that the police had launched legal proceedings against and detained Anh on charges of fraud and asset misappropriation.
In October 2023, the local police received a report from MSB regarding the discovery of signs indicating that Hoai Anh had misappropriated VND165 billion from customers.
Upon further investigation, the police discovered that she had misappropriated assets totaling VND338 billion from eight victims.
“We are taking steps to recover the assets for the victims. At this stage, no accomplices have been identified, and our investigation is ongoing,” Tung said at the press conference.
Reports about customers’ complaints about their bank accounts missing money at one of its branches had attracted public attention through the media.
One victim, a resident of Hanoi, recalled that she had conducted transactions on her account normally for the past two years. However, in early October 2023, she was informed by the police that the funds she had deposited in MSB Bank were missing, amounting to over VND58 billion.
Upon scrutinizing the bank’s operations, abnormal signs involving certain staff members were detected, prompting the bank to report to the police.
