National Assembly approves two new deputy prime ministers

HCMC – The National Assembly on October 25 passed a resolution endorsing Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s proposals to appoint Pham Thi Thanh Tra and Ho Quoc Dung as deputy prime ministers for the 2021–2026 term.

Of 430 legislators participating in the vote, 429 voted in favor while one abstained.

Pham Thi Thanh Tra, born in 1964 in Nghe An Province, holds a master’s degree in education management and an advanced degree in political theory. She is a member of the 13th Party Central Committee and a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

She earlier served in several key roles in the former Yen Bai Province (now Lao Cai), including chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee and secretary of the provincial Party Committee. Since April 2021, she has been minister of Home Affairs.

Tra is Vietnam’s first female deputy prime minister.

Ho Quoc Dung, born in 1966 in Gia Lai Province, holds a master’s degree in law and an advanced degree in political theory. He is a member of the 13th Party Central Committee and has served in key leadership roles in the former Binh Dinh Province, including chairman and later secretary of the provincial Party Committee. Following the merger of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh, he was appointed secretary of the new Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee.

Following the appointments, the Government leadership now includes Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and nine deputy prime ministers: Nguyen Hoa Binh, Tran Hong Ha, Le Thanh Long, Ho Duc Phoc, Bui Thanh Son, Mai Van Chinh, Nguyen Chi Dung, Ho Quoc Dung, and Pham Thi Thanh Tra.
