National Party Congress opens in Hanoi

HCMC – The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) opened its 14th National Congress in Hanoi City today, January 20, bringing together 1,586 delegates to set political directions and leadership arrangements for the next term.

The congress convened at the National Convention Center and adopted a draft Political Report outlining development goals to 2030 and a long-term vision focused on strategic self-reliance and national advancement under socialism.

The congress elected a 16-member Presidium drawn from the 13th Politburo, headed by Party General Secretary To Lam as president of the Presidium. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the opening session under the Presidium’s assignment.

Other members of the Presidium include State President Luong Cuong, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Secretary of the Party Committee of Central Party Agencies Tran Cam Tu, and senior leaders from the Government, legislature, armed forces, public security, and mass organisations.

The congress brings together 1,586 delegates representing more than 5.6 million Communist Party members nationwide.

Attendees at the opening session included incumbent and former Party and State leaders, veteran revolutionaries, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, and representatives of intellectuals, religious organisations, and youth groups. Foreign ambassadors and representatives of international organisations in Vietnam were also present.

Ahead of the opening, delegates paid tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and laid wreaths at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs in Hanoi City on January 19.

At its preparatory session on January 19, the congress approved its working regulations, program and election rules. It also elected a five-member Secretariat and a 13-member board to verify the eligibility of participating delegates.

The congress unanimously approved the delegate verification report, confirming that all 1,586 delegates summoned to the 14th National Congress are eligible.
